AI Act (EU)

In one line

The European Union's law on artificial intelligence. It sets rules for AI systems based on how much risk they pose to people's safety and rights.

The AI Act is a European Union regulation, so it applies across all EU countries, including Slovenia. Its main idea is that stricter rules apply where the stakes are higher. A small number of uses are banned outright. AI used in sensitive areas, such as hiring, education or access to public services, faces strict requirements. Lower-risk tools mostly have to be open about being AI.

For ordinary people, one visible effect is transparency: you should be told when you are talking to a chatbot, and AI-generated content such as deepfakes should be labelled.

The Act was adopted in 2024 and its rules take effect in stages over several years. It does not ban AI in general, and it does not cover every use, for example most military uses.
